Construction Value

A flagship facility in the CapeNature public product offering, the Algeria Campsite in the Cederberg was ear-marked for an upgrade. Ruben Reddy Architects proposed master planning for the facility and implemented several components thereof, including the new Administrative Centre, 6 Visitor Chalets and a new Ablution block.

Challenges included working within an active facility in nature reserve, providing contemporary facilities & amenities in a precinct with a lack of infrastructure as well as with a 30% contract value stipulation for local labour participation.

The Administrative centre location was chosen to best guide visitors to the facility but also exploited favourable views and was crafted beautifully and carefully as to suit local weather conditions.

A large roof and other shading devices limit glazing exposure to direct sunlight whilst underfloor & ceiling insulation assist to control internal temperatures within this environment where external temperatures regularly reach above 40 degrees Celsius in the summer months. Cross ventilation and other passive design mechanisms further ensure a comfortable work environment throughout the year.
